How Do I Schedule My Week?
A Simple Guide to Maximizing Joy and Productivity
I get asked quite often how I fit everything into my day, week and schedule in general. To be transparent, raising 5 children kind of forced me into that early on but it did feed into my established passion for figuring out how to best make use of my time.
Life is busy for everyone and not just for people with many children. Between work, family, personal commitments, and unexpected challenges, it can feel overwhelming to stay on top of it all. Have you ever found yourself wondering, “How do I schedule my week to get everything done *and* make room for joy?
Seriously, who doesn’t deserve a little room for joy?
I’ve spent years refining my own system to create balance, clarity, and space for happiness. Here’s a glimpse into my method and some tips to help you design a schedule that supports your goals, well-being, and, of course, joy.
Start With Your Priorities
Before you even begin filling out your planner or digital calendar, take a moment to reflect. What are the top goals or priorities in your life this week? These can be tied to your work, personal growth, family, or self-care. If joy is a priority (and it should be), make sure it’s right there at the top of your list.
Pro Tip: Choose 2-3 key goals that you want to focus on. These should be your non-negotiables.
Schedule your Static Events
Review your calendar for any recurring events or occasions that are fixed and difficult to change this week, such as birthdays, anniversaries, vacations, doctor appointments, or holidays. Only you can determine the time and energy each of these commitments will require, but be sure to factor them in when planning your week. Consider additional efforts like travel time, gift shopping, sending cards, packing, or any other necessary preparations.
Pro Tip: To avoid last-minute stress, set reminders a few days in advance for any prep work related to these events. This will give you extra time to handle things like gift shopping or packing, allowing you to stay on top of your schedule without feeling rushed.
Time Block and Batch Similar Tasks
One of the most effective ways to stay organized is by combining time blocking with task batching. Time blocking involves setting aside specific chunks of time for different tasks or activities, while task batching means grouping similar tasks together—like answering emails, running errands, or scheduling appointments. This minimizes distractions, reduces context-switching, and helps you stay focused, making your day more efficient and manageable.
Pro Tip: Grouping similar tasks within designated time blocks allows for more seamless transitions, helping you maintain your flow and productivity throughout the day.
Use the Rule of Three
This rule is a game-changer. Rather than overwhelming yourself with a mile-long to-do list, focus on one to three key tasks for section of your life, each day. I consider each section the following: Self/Personal, Home and Work. By completing these one to three high-priority tasks, you’ll feel accomplished, productive, and less stressed.
Pro Tip: Every evening, list the top three things you want to accomplish the next day. Focus on these, and anything else is a bonus.
Schedule Joy First
Yes, you read that right. In the *More Room For Joy* method, joy is a priority, not an afterthought. Whether it’s a quick coffee with a friend, 30 minutes of reading, or a walk in nature, schedule time for activities that bring you happiness and fulfillment. These moments will recharge your spirit and help you stay motivated throughout the week.
Pro Tip: Add “Joy Blocks” to your schedule at least 2-3 times a week. It could be as simple as a self-care ritual or watching your favorite show.
Reflect and Adjust
At the end of each week, take a few minutes to reflect. What worked? What didn’t? Did you feel more balanced? What brought you joy? This reflection allows you to continually refine your schedule, adjusting for what you need in the upcoming week.
Pro Tip: Use Sunday evening to review your upcoming week and reflect on how well you aligned your time with your goals and values. Make adjustments as needed.
Embrace Flexibility
While it’s important to have structure, it’s equally important to allow for flexibility. Life can be unpredictable, and sometimes things won’t go according to plan. That’s okay! Having a flexible mindset means you can adjust without guilt or stress, keeping your well-being and joy in focus.
Pro Tip: Don’t be afraid to move tasks around as needed. Your schedule is a tool to help you, not a rigid rulebook.
Take Breaks
We often think that powering through the day leads to more productivity, but breaks are crucial to maintain energy, creativity, and focus. Short breaks throughout the day will help you avoid burnout and keep your mind fresh.
Pro Tip: Schedule small breaks between time blocks. A 5-to-10-minute stretch or a short walk can make a big difference in how you feel. It will also help with feelings of being overwhelmed! Pace yourself so you don’t have to brace yourself!
The key to scheduling your week is making sure it serves you. Prioritize what matters, make room for joy, and be flexible as you go. If you approach your time with intention, you’ll feel more in control, less overwhelmed, and much more aligned with the joyful life you deserve.
Remember, it’s not just about getting everything done. It’s about designing a week that supports your happiness and purpose.
Now, how will you make more room for joy in your week?
