What does “More Room For Joy” stand for?
A friend recently asked me how I arrived at the name for my business “More Room For Joy”.
Watch the video of my response HERE (with bonus info).
My consulting business was (and still is) Christine C. Baker Marriage Consulting, however, it doesn’t really capture the essence of the mission that I wanted to share with you.
Like many of you, I have experienced loss and grief, as we all have. One thing that my mother instilled in me was to be grateful. With any experience that I had growing up, my mother would immediately ask, “What are you grateful for?” I was conditioned, to always find the good in anything that happened. What that taught me as an adult, that no matter what we can always find the good or the joy in things. As we move through the struggles of our lives, we can be grateful for the lessons we are learning. From that gratitude, we can find and experience joy again.
Feeling joy is a birthright. We all deserve to feel and experience it. When we feel joy, we are able to be the best person we are meant to be. My mission is to help you achieve that and to help you create room for joy in your life. So often we deprive ourselves of feeling joy because we don’t feel worthy, we don’t feel like we have enough time, we feel chaotic, or have no way of knowing how to find joy. Sometimes it hard to know where to even begin. I am here to help!
Sometimes we fill our minds and our physical space with clutter which is distracting from seeing opportunities from achieving joy. It is my mission to help you create the room needed to design a joyful life.
Here is another thing I am passionate about. I am the type of person that tries to pack in as much stuff in my day, into my week and into my life as a whole as possible. I have a keen awareness that I cannot replace time and each that passes I am closer to the end of my days. I don’t mean to be morbid but, it’s true!
When I tune into that feeling of time passing, I get these sense that I still have so many things left to do, places to see, lessons to experience, and people to love. These things bring me JOY! I am only able to do that by managing my time effectively and efficiently.
In order to create joyful experiences, I need to make more room for it. I want to help you do the same.

We have decided to continue distance learning. Any suggestions on keeping my student on track?
Yes! Absolutely! I have a few suggestions that have worked for others before, including me with my children! This is also great information for families with students who are learning with a hybrid model or fully in-person model.

Tip #1: Create a private cubby/office for your student by using a tri-fold display board like this one [yes, this is an affiliate link]:
This is also good for students who are easily distracted. Have your student decorate it or even create a mini office with it! This will help them focus and be less distracted.
Tip #2: Schedule a lunchtime and recess time.
Knowing when their breaks are will help to motivate the student to stay focused and get their work done. This will also help to prevent them (and the parents/guardians/caretakers) from eating all day – can you say Covid snacking? Setting a static lunchtime each day creates a nice break and a time to look forward to. It breaks up remote learning and keeps the continuity of a normal school day, creating a sense of normalcy. You could even pack them your student lunch! Make sure they also have time to get up, stretch, move around, play outside, or just have a change of scenery. This refreshes the brain and prepares it for the rest of the day.
Tip #3: Encourage your student to still participate in “specials”.
Studies have proven that classes such as art, PE, music, etc enhance and support general curriculum learning. They are beneficial in and of themselves and can be utilized as stand-alone resources. The internet houses hundreds of resources where you can tap into support for these “specials”.
BONUS TIP: Have them navigate their own self-directed learning experience. Decide on a topic that they are interested in and have them report back ten facts about that topic. From that list, have them pick 5 points that they want to investigate a little deeper. Have them uses sources other than Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. Never before in the history of humanity have our children had so much access to knowledge and information. Learning how to research is just as important as the information itself.
