Staying Healthy During the Holidays
I ALWAYS get sick when I am stressed, burned out or over extended. The upcoming weeks are a perfect playground for that scenario to resurface.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
The holiday season is a time of joy, connection, and celebration, but it can also bring challenges to your physical and emotional well-being. With a few intentional strategies, you can savor the magic of the season while maintaining your health, energy and dare I say…create more room for joy!
1. Prioritize Sleep and Rest
Amid holiday excitement, sleep often gets neglected, but it’s critical for your overall well-being. Establish or continue your bedtime routine that includes calming activities like reading or meditation, and aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night. A well-rested body can better handle the extra demands of the season.
2. Stay Hydrated and Eat Mindfully
Yummy, traditional treats are abundant during the holidays, but balance is key. Enjoy your favorites without guilt, while also incorporating nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins into your meals. Staying hydrated with water or herbal teas can curb overindulgence and keep your energy up and sustainable.
3. Keep Moving
Exercise helps manage holiday stress and maintain physical health. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga session, or even a dance party with family, staying active can be fun and energizing. Aim for at least 30 minutes of movement each day. If you can’t do 30 minutes, aim for what you can do, then push yourself an additional minute each day. Before you know it, you will be thriving!
4. Practice Stress Management
The holidays can feel overwhelming with packed schedules and family dynamics. To combat this, schedule time for self-care—quiet time, journaling, deep breathing, or a gratitude practice can keep stress levels in check. Regular mindfulness exercises help you stay grounded and joyful.
5. Plan Ahead
Effective planning reduces last-minute stress. Create lists for gifts, groceries, and holiday tasks to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Planning in advance also allows you to allocate time for what matters most—cherished moments with loved ones.
6. Set Boundaries and Simplify
Learn to say “no” to commitments that don’t align with your priorities. Simplify where you can, such as opting for fewer, more meaningful gifts or potluck-style meals to share the workload. This approach keeps the focus on connection rather than perfection.
7. Embrace Gratitude and Reflection
The holiday season is a perfect time to reflect on the positives in your life. Make space for gratitude by jotting down three things you’re thankful for each day. This practice enhances your mood and keeps the holiday spirit alive. It also reminds us what is a priority in our lives.
By staying intentional about your health and well-being, you can create a season that’s joyful, fulfilling, and stress-free. Remember, the holidays are about connection and love—everything else is secondary.
