The Last Gift of Time
This holiday season diverged from tradition as I found myself at my father-in-law’s bedside, far from home. Though my first husband – his youngest son – passed away nearly 23 years ago, our bond never diminished. “You’re stuck with me,” he would joke, considering me his daughter-in-law for life.
His love extended beyond me to embrace my children, and later, my new husband and our son together – whom he proudly became godfather to. As December unfolded, the rhythm of providing care replaced familiar holiday routines. Instead of shopping and wrapping gifts, we wrapped ourselves in quiet moments and cherished memories.
There’s a unique kind of intimacy in these moments – watching someone you love slowly slip away. It’s raw, it’s painful, but there’s also something profoundly sacred about it. As we took turns holding his hand, sharing stories, and simply being present, I realized that this too was a gift – perhaps the most important one we could give or receive.
We often wait for the “right moment” to visit family, to make that trip, to have that conversation. We tell ourselves there will be time later, that conditions will be better next month, next year. But life doesn’t wait for perfect timing. It unfolds in its own way, on its own schedule.
What I learned in this experience, amidst the rushing to get the right drink and whispered conversations, was that showing up – really showing up – for the difficult moments matters just as much as being there for the celebrations. Perhaps even more so. These are the times that define our relationships and leave lasting imprints on our hearts.
The greatest regrets often come not from what we did, but from what we postponed until it was too late. Don’t wait for the perfect moment to connect, to express love, to be present. The time we have with those we cherish is finite, and sometimes the most valuable gift we can offer is simply being there, even when – especially when – it’s hard.
Live now. Love now. Be present now. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, but today is here, waiting for us to embrace it with all its imperfect, beautiful reality.
Much love to you!Â
